Most people don't lose focus in a vacuum. It happens in the middle of something that actually matters, a meeting that needed your full attention, a lecture you meant to follow closely, a block of work you'd set aside on purpose. And somewhere in the middle of it, the hand instinctively picks up the phone.
People in India spend close to 50 hours a month on Instagram. That's just under 2 hours a day of mindless scrolling.
The usual explanation is lack of willpower. Not enough discipline, too much temptation, a phone that's simply too close at hand. But that explanation assumes the lapse is a character problem. There's a simpler possibility worth testing first.

What if the drift toward the phone isn't a willpower problem at all. What if it's a caffeine problem.
Sustained attention takes effort, and a monotonous task doesn't give you much reason to put in much effort anyways. The task is uninteresting, nothing new is happening, so nothing is pulling your focus back in. That's when the mind starts looking for something else to hold onto, and your phone is the easiest "something else" in the room. If that's the real mechanism, the fix isn't more discipline. It's making sure you're actually equipped to stay with a task before you start it.
And that's the question some University of Waterloo researchers set out to test.
03The setup
In 2024, researchers at the University of Waterloo – Kruger, Dixon, Oakman and Smilek, published a study in Consciousness and Cognition looking at exactly this question: does caffeine change how well people sustain attention during a boring task.
The setup was simple. Participants did an auditory attention task across two sessions, with thought probes scattered throughout to catch moments of mind-wandering. Everyone went through the first session under the same conditions – no caffeine, no placebo – just a shared baseline. Only after that first session did the groups split. One group of 61 people chewed a 200mg caffeinated gum, roughly the same dose of caffeine as a double shot of espresso. The second group chewed a placebo gum. Both groups waited about 20 minutes, the rough window caffeine needs to take effect, before starting session two.
Because the split happened after session one, any difference that showed up in session two could be attributed to the caffeine itself, not to some pre-existing gap between the two groups.

The difference showed up. The caffeine group was more locked in during session two: more time spent actually on task, fewer spontaneous instances of mind-wandering, and lower self-reported boredom, sleepiness, and mental effort compared to the placebo group.
None of this was a dramatic transformation. It was a modest, measurable shift in the same direction across several markers of attention, which is a more convincing kind of evidence than one dramatic number would be. The task didn't suddenly get more interesting. The people doing it were simply better equipped to stay with it.

None of this means caffeine turns a boring task into an exciting one. What it suggests is narrower and more useful: when a task is going to demand sustained, unglamorous attention, having caffeine on board beforehand seems to help you actually stay with it, rather than drifting off toward whatever's buzzing in your pocket.
So the next time when staying focused is expected to be the hard part, have your coffee first.
